As part of our expanding scope of practice we are happy to offer this service. Ortho-K is a clinical technique which uses specially designed contact lenses to eliminate refractive error. Contact lenses are worn to bed at night and the need for contacts lenses or spectacles during the day is eliminated.
What is Ortho-K?
Ortho-K is short for Orthokeratology. It involves wearing a hard contact lens overnight, which gently flattens the cornea to correct myopia (short-sightedness).
Ortho-K is not a new procedure, however new technology has allowed it to become a safe and accurate method of vision correction. It is non-invasive, and completely reversible.
People with mild to moderate amounts of myopia are usually suitable for Ortho-K, however other factors such as corneal curvature and astigmatism need to be considered.
Benefits of Ortho-K
- No spectacles
- No contact lenses during waking hours
- Can wear regular fashion sunglasses
- Completely reversible procedure (unlike LASIK)
- No more dry eyes from soft contact lenses and air-conditioning
- Great for people who enjoy water sports
- Ideal for anyone working in hot or dusty environments
- May slow myopia progression
What is involved in Ortho K?
Firstly, a full eye examination is needed to determine if Ortho-K is right for you. Following this, precise measurements of the shape of your eye are taken to determine the correct lens. You will be taught how to insert and remove the lenses, and how to care for them. The lenses will then be worn for an overnight trial. Your vision may take a few days to reach the target level, and a few weeks for it to be stable. Regular appointments are required during this time to monitor the treatment. The clear vision achieved with Ortho-K only continues while you are doing the procedure. If you cease wearing the lenses, your eyes will return to normal.
Ortho-K involves an upfront investment in both time and cost. The end result, however, is naturally clear vision as well as reduced future costs in glasses and soft contact lenses.
